How to Pick the Proper Size for Your Kyte Baby Sleep Bag

More than just cozy sleepwear for your baby, a sleep bag is the safest way to keep your baby warm and comfortable during the night. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), loose blankets are a major safe sleep no-no, due to an increased risk of SIDS or suffocation in children under 12 months of age. If your little one has outgrown the swaddling stage or flat out refuses to be swaddled, it’s time to switch them into a sleep bag. Kyte Baby sleep bags are designed for use from birth, and are essentially a wearable blanket to keep your baby at the perfect temperature all night long. Since our sleep bags are made from bamboo rayon with thermoregulating properties and are TOG-rated, selecting the right one for the season and climate is easy and straightforward—once you know exactly which size to get.

When used properly, a sleep bag is a very safe way to keep your baby warm at night without the threat of suffocation or entrapment that a loose blanket would pose. Although you may prefer to size up in your baby’s clothes so they have room to grow, a sleep bag should always be a perfect fit for your baby’s weight and height. A properly fitting sleep bag isn’t too loose at the neck (when you pull the fabric up, it should stop short of your baby’s mouth or nose and fall back down into place) or around the arms (your baby shouldn’t be able to slip into the bag). If the sleep bag fits well around the top but seems very long, don’t worry—our sleep bags are purposely made longer to give your baby plenty of room to kick and grow for hip-healthy development.

To figure out what size sleep bag your baby needs, you may refer to our size chart as a guideline. If you’ve been familiar with Kyte Baby for a while, you may remember that our sleep bag sizes were once based on age: 0-6 months, 6-18 months, and 18-36 months. Because babies and children are all different sizes, regardless of their age, we updated our size chart to provide a more accurate fit prediction. If you follow the recommendations below, your sleep bag should fit your little one well.

X-Small:

  • 7 to 13 lbs (3-6 kg)
  • 20 to 25 inches (50-63 cm)

Small:

  • 14 to 20 lbs (6-9 kg)
  • 22 to 27 inches (56-69 cm)

Medium:

  • 18 to 30 lbs (8-13 kg)
  • 26 to 33 inches (64-88 cm)

Large:

  • 28 to 42 lbs (12-19 kg)
  • 33 to 40 inches (84-102 cm)

X-Large:

  • 38 to 50 lbs (17-23 kg)
  • 37 to 47 inches (94-117 cm)

The size chart is a good way to determine the best size for your baby, but since babies come in all shapes and sizes, it’s prudent to do a fit check and make sure that it fits properly around the neck and upper body. The sleep bag should fit snug but not tight, and there should be plenty of room at the bottom for your baby’s legs to assume the froggy position. A sleep bag that is too big will be loose, baggy, and pose a major safety risk to your little one. On the other hand, a sleep bag that is too small will be tight and restrict their movement—another big no-no. A well-fitting sleep bag will fit comfortably all around without excess fabric around the neck and arms.

Remember—check the fit before you cut the tags! Our return policy requires that all items be returned with their original tags, so have your baby try on the sleep bag as soon as it arrives. If it doesn’t fit the way it’s supposed to, you’ll want to exchange it for the right size to keep your baby as safe as possible during sleep. A well-fitting sleep bag is the key to a worry-free and restful night for both you and your little one.
