Every month, Kyte Baby spotlights a NICU nominated by members of our community through our Nominate-a-NICU initiative. Through this program, we have been able to donate to NICUs all over the country and support the lifesaving care they provide to the most fragile and critically ill babies. So many of our community members credit these hospitals to saving the lives of their very own children. We read your stories, and we are honored to name Sutter Health as our June NICU.
About Sutter Health
Sutter Health is a not-for-profit, people-centered healthcare system headquartered in Sacramento, CA. With 16 birth centers and 7 NICUs throughout the state of California, Sutter Health offers top quality critical care for its littlest patients. Sutter Health's NICUs range from Level II to Level IV, the highest level of neonatal support available.
There are over 400 care team members working at Sutter Health's birth centers and NICUs, including obstetricians, NICU nurses, and midwives. Board-certified neonatologists and over 50 pediatric subspecialists provide around-the-clock care to ensure that these babies are given the best support and expertise.
Specialized Care and Life-Saving Technology
Sutter Health has dedicated spaces, pediatric subspecialists, and state-of-the-art NICU equipment to handle the most complex cases. The NICUs at Sutter Health offer:
- Quiet, low-light units for infants born as early as 22 weeks
- Advanced surgical support for complex neonatal surgery
- Integrated cardiology services for congenital heart conditions
- Continuous EEG brain monitoring
- Therapeutic cooling therapy to protect and heal the brain
- Advanced respiratory support, included CPAP and ECMO
24/7 Neonatal Transport
Every year, over 25,000 babies are born at Sutter hospitals. About 15% of these neonates require specialized NICU care. Sutter Health's Deikel Family Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Program connects these critically ill newborns to the specialized care that gives them the best chance at survival and lifelong health.
This program is a fully integrated, 24/7 regional transport network that serves Northern California. Specialized teams deploy by ground and air, supporting continuity of care from bedside to bedside. Each team includes pediatric EMTs, nurses, respiratory therapists, and a medical director with specialized transport expertise.
Words From the Kyte Community
"My baby was there for one month. They took such good care of her and showed us so much love. The nurses always showed up happy with so much love to give to the babies."
-Isela R. (Sutter Roseville Medical Center Birth Center)

"My daughter spent 52 days in their NICU. She received the best care I have ever seen. The nurse, staff, and people in general were so kind, caring, and helpful. I will forever cherish them."
-Julie W. (Sutter Medical Center Birth Center)
"My son was born at 23 weeks and 3 days. He spent 141 days in their NICU and received amazing care by all of the nurses, doctors and respiratory therapists. Our miracle baby is alive today, thanks to their hard work."
-Ariana G. (Sutter Medical Center Birth Center)
"My son was born at Sutter Sacramento and was taken care of most of his short life by the NICU/PICU teams there. He was born with a genetic condition that included arthrogryposis, a condition with multiple joint contractures. The NICU team treated him with the utmost respect and care. When it was time to make the decision to let him go, we felt empowered and so supported by the hospital."
-Madeline W. (Sutter Medical Center Birth Center)
"SRMC is a community, not-for-profit, hospital that reaches out to communities near and far. They provide family-centered care, lodging to families, and gas cards for those who have a long commute. The NICU doesn't have a Child Life Program, so they are supported by the staff to purchase and donate blankets, clothes, and coloring supplies for siblings. They have an annual NICU reunion to support and cheer on the NICU "graduates." Those who work in the NICU love what they do and it shows!"
-Jenna E. (Sutter Roseville Medical Center Birth Center)
