March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day that is dedicated not only to celebrating the many economic, social, political, and cultural achievements of women but also to recognizing the various challenges that women around the world face. Although women have been advocating for equal rights, opportunities, and freedoms for decades, gender inequality still exists in many different aspects of life, including healthcare.
According to a report from the World Economic Forum and the McKinsey Health Institute, massive inequities exist in women’s health and women’s health research. Women & Infants Hospital is one hospital that is doing its part in closing this health gap through its dedication to improving the health and well-being of women and infants. In honor of International Women’s Day, we have named Women & Infants Hospital as our March NICU.
Women & Infants Hospital is located in Providence, RI, and it is one of the premier healthcare facilities for women in the country. Founded in 1884 as the Providence Lying-In Hospital, it was exclusively a maternity hospital where women could safely deliver their babies. As patient needs and medical technology changed, so did the hospital. Today, it is the largest obstetrical facility in Rhode Island, the second largest in New England, and the ninth largest stand-alone obstetrical service in the country.
Every year, Women & Infants Hospital delivers nearly 8,400 babies and cares for 1,200 newborns in its Special Care Nursery, which is the only neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the region. The hospital’s gynecologic and general surgical program performs over 7,500 procedures a year and provides a comprehensive array of services that meet the needs of women throughout their lifespan.
With services that include infertility treatment, breast care, gynecologic cancer, urinary incontinence, prenatal diagnosis, low-risk and high-risk obstetrics, gynecology care, women’s gastrointestinal health, behavioral health, and primary care, it’s easy to see how Women & Infants Hospital has earned recognition as one of the best hospitals in the country for women’s health.
Among its many accreditations and awards, this hospital has been designated as:
-
A Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiography
-
A Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology
-
A Center of Biomedical Research Excellence by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
-
A Neonatal Resource Services Center of Excellence
-

-

“My daughter was born at 30 weeks. We spent 52 days in the NICU and watched the lives of many others be touched by the caring hands of the NICU staff there.”
-Ashley B.
“This hospital not only saved my life but also the lives of my premature twin boys. During delivery, I was knocking at death’s door, and one of my twins came out not breathing. They provided such great care and we are all thriving now."
-Rebecca L.
“My daughter was born prematurely at 32 weeks and 5 days due to my diagnosis of preeclampsia. From the moment we arrived at the hospital, we were both cared for by every person we encountered. My daughter spent close to a month in the NICU, and the team of nurses and doctors were always so patient, answering a million questions and taking the best care of my daughter.”
-Sarah W.
