Packing the bag for your labor and delivery can be so exciting-- it means you’re getting closer to meeting your sweet little babe(s)! It doesn’t have to be stressful, and remember, most facilities will have extras of what you may need so if something is forgotten, it will be okay.
Most people try to have their bags packed by 36 weeks and they keep it handy, either by their front door or in their car. This is also around the time the car seat is installed! You never know when you may go into labor, so prepare early.
It’s helpful to also pack for your partner as well, though they will probably need less things than you do! Your baby will also not need too much but we will include all the essentials for your birth bag!
Things to include for the one giving birth:
- Multiple copies of your birth plan
- ID/wallet/insurance card
- A robe or clothing that can make breastfeeding more accessible if that’s your plan; also consider ease of access for skin to skin!
- Nursing tanks, comfortable pajamas, or loungewear
- Warm/cozy socks
- Certain toiletries that help you feel comfortable (brush, shampoo/dry shampoo, extra hair ties, chapstick, lotion, toothbrush/toothpaste, deodorant, extra contacts or glasses, face wash)
- Special drinks like coconut water or gatorade for replacing electrolytes
- An extra long cell phone charger
- Nipple balm
- Pillow
- Depends or adult diapers
Things to include for baby:
- Car seat
- Going home outfit
- Pediatricians information
Things to include for labor support/birthing partner:
- Snacks/drinks
- Extra clothes
- Cell phone charger
- Toiletries (deodorant, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste)
- Laptop or ipad

If there are other things you need but cannot pack right away, keep a list with your bag so you know what to grab before you leave for the hospital or birth center!
This can be such a fun and exciting time for your family so enjoy the coming weeks before meeting your little one and imagine seeing their face for the first time while you’re packing the hospital bag!
