What TOG For Summer?

What TOG For Summer?

For most of us, July and August are the hottest months of the year and that summer heat makes for an unsafe sleeping environment in the baby’s room. Thankfully, we’ve got a TOG for that.

Dressing your little one for sleep can be a bit daunting if you’re a new parent who’s just starting to learn the ins and outs of baby sleepwear. Thankfully, TOG ratings take a lot of the guesswork out of keeping your little one comfortable for naps and bedtime. TOG, which stands for Thermal Overall Grade, is a way to measure the warmth of a garment or bedding. Kyte Baby sleep bags and blankets come in three TOGs: 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5. While 1.0 TOG is considered a year-round TOG because it suits the ideal room temperature for sleep, it may still be too warm, depending on the climate you live in and the temperature of your home.

Our 0.5 TOG sleep bag is the lowest TOG rating we carry and it’s made up of two layers of our signature bamboo rayon. Unlike our other sleep bags, it does not have quilting on the inside. It is simply two thin layers of thermoregulating bamboo, and it suits room temperatures between 74 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. If your little one’s sleep environment gets warm during the summer or your baby just runs too warm for 1.0 TOG, 0.5 TOG may be the perfect fit.

Maximize Your TOG

Get the most out of your 0.5 sleep bag with these pointers:

  • Don’t overdress. This sleep sack is meant to keep your baby from overheating, so don’t layer too much. Your little one’s pajamas are layers that will add to the warmth rating of the sleep sack. For example, if you dress them in a footie underneath the 0.5 TOG sleep bag, you have added a layer of warmth which raises the TOG level. To keep the sleep sack around 0.5 TOG, layer lightly. Try a bodysuit, a long-sleeve bodysuit or a sleeveless romper.
  • Check the nursery’s temperature regularly to make sure the ambient temperature falls within the 0.5 TOG window: 74–78 °F or 23–26 °C. If it's cooler than the recommended range, layer with more pajamas; if it's warmer than the recommended range, consider leaving your little one in just a diaper under their sleep bag.
  • Keep the nursery temperature consistent. Close the windows, draw the blinds, turn off the lights and even toggle the air vent to divert air from blowing directly on your baby’s crib. These small measures will stabilize the temperature in their room.
  • Program your home’s thermostat to stay at one temperature all night long. By controlling the home’s overall conditions, you can keep the nursery at the ideal temperature for the 0.5 TOG sleep bag.

As the seasons change, your baby’s sleep bag may change, too. For hot summer months, our 0.5 TOG sleep bag keeps your little one comfortable and prevents overheating. Overheating can raise the risk of SIDS and, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is a preventable environmental stressor. Take the proper precautions to keep your baby from overheating—dress them in a 0.5 TOG sleep bag during the hottest months of the year, layer lightly, and check the nursery’s temperature often. All these measures add up to make sleep as safe as possible for your little one and keep your mind at ease.
